TEN THINGS I WOULD CHANGE
LLT 535 DISTANCE ED FOR THE K-12 EDUCATOR
I chose this particular document for this criteria because of its reflective qualities. It was an assignment that involved needing to consider our current teaching method and creating a list of things we would need to do to transition our class online successfully. Although this was a smaller assignment, it was particularly valuable because I ended up having to do the very things I had casually contemplated in the assignment. It began as a reflection forward and has now become a reflection backward.
Items from the document that I have done and have had success with, are items like needing to be very specific about my requirements. What is expected, and the importance of communication. I use a weekly timeline of students' activities to connect with assignments easily, and I clearly post due dates. I also provide self-guided tutorials for students to work through new skills and projects on their own. These activities have all proven to be successful for my students.
Looking back on this document, I really need to improve upon ideas having to do with collaboration. One of the most difficult things this year is creating a classroom where all the students are working together. This school year started completely virtual, transitioned to hybrid for any students who wanted to be in school, and now students are either in full time or virtual full time. While creating flipped classroom activities has been successful for the students to learn, there hasn't really been any sense of unity in creating relationships between students in school and those who are virtual.
I believe I struggle with having students connect in my classroom, particularly in a year where half of them are virtual because I teach all minors. I only get to see my students for 40 minutes every other day. Because of this schedule, I spent a lot of my time focusing on what I want students to learn and sometimes miss out on the important parts of making human connections and leaving time for sharing. As a result of reflecting and looking back over this document, I have been making some positive changes to connect with my students personally, having my "Zoomies and Roomies" connect via video calls and giving them a space to share images.
