My philosophy of teaching has evolved over the years. Teaching is both a science and a craft. My passion as an art educator evolved from my love of creating and from my fascination with helping others do the same. While my passion for teaching developed out of a love of the arts, I find myself in a position of wanting to be a teacher leader. My desire as an educator is to provide the best learning opportunities for my students and to model that and share those experiences with my fellow educators. This includes modeling effective use of technology in the classroom that improves student learning, and makes sense for the activities being presented. I believe it is important to know the difference between using technology for technology sake as opposed to using it to enhance learning.
My background is in Art Education. It is a field often misunderstood, and undervalued. Through the art room students are introduced to a continual opportunity to engage in hands-on projects that develop creativity and important problem solving skills. Art offers the chance to develop fine motor skills, recognition of pattern, and spacial awareness. It offers the chance to imagine an idea, plan the process, and produce a finished product. It provides an opportunity for a more well rounded intellectual development. When properly incorporated into the art room, technology can enhance the learning experience. Using flipped classroom activities can free up time for students to work on their projects, and helps students take ownership of their learning.
In my classroom I seek to continually reflect on the projects I am presenting. I believe a good educator should always be thinking about the value of what they are teaching. What are the most important parts of a lesson that you want students to take away from a project, why does it matter and is there any room for improvement? My art curriculum leaves room for creativity and redevelopment of ideas which has always been part of what I love about teaching the subject. Just as there is a never ending flow of change and creativity in the art room, I believe there should be a continual revisiting and reflection of what and how you teach.
Beyond my classroom, I seek to share ideas and experiences with my fellow educators. I have taken on the role of leading professional development to help others incorporate technology effectively in their classrooms. I believe it is beneficial to engage in leadership activities as it allows one to reflect on best practices in the classroom. It is my goal as an educator and teacher leader to help create a shared vision and culture for using technology to learn and accelerate transformation through the coaching process. I desire to help my colleagues know what and how to use technology to enhance their teaching, and improve the learning process for students. Being able to model helpful technology integration in the Art Room has helped increase awareness of the possibilities of how these newer resources can be used.
