Support educators to interpret qualitative and quantitative data to inform their decisions and support individual student learning.
Mid-Year Reflection Self Evaluation
Professional Experience There are several ways to use data to inform decisions. In the previous standard I wrote about the grading system to identify student interaction within the LMS. It is a one-stop-shop for instant access to quantitative data. You can locate data from individual students as well as whole classes. It is also an easy place to communicate with individual students about missing assignments and isolate those who are missing coursework. Of course, simply using formative and summative assessment for individual student work also gives you a way to identify which students grasp concepts and who might need more help. Because teaching this year has been so different than other years. I wanted to know how students felt about their ability to work in an online environment. After the end of the second marking period, I created a survey to poll students. The survey served two different purposes. It gave me an idea of how students liked the teaching format I was using, and it also served as a self-evaluation and a way for students to reflect on their work habits. I required that they completed the assignment, but I did not collect email addresses or names. I wanted students to be honest about their answers. The survey wasn’t long, but it gathered both quantitative and qualitative data. Students could reflect and think about setting goals for themselves and how they could accomplish those goals. I was pleased with the transparency of their answers. I believe the students were genuinely interested in sharing their opinions about how they prefer working and what part they need to do to be successful. As educators, it’s important to remember to connect with students to understand what they are learning and how they are learning. Gathering this information from your students can help guide the way you design lessons and improve student learning. |
